Hülkenberg evasive about his future: “Nothing is signed”

In an Interlagos paddock where sporting interest is necessarily less after obtaining a sixth world crown by Mercedes et Lewis Hamilton, the media session of Nico Hulkenberg did not fail to attract people.

The confirmation of Antonio Giovinazzi at Alfa Romeo in 2020, and to a lesser extent contract renewals at Red Bull et Toro Rosso, have completed ratifying what had been taking shape for weeks, namely that the German would not be in F1 next year.

Formula e with Mahindra, DTM under BMW colors, and now IndyCar, Hülkenberg has been expected in many championships in recent times. The latest rumor recently sent him to the other side of the Atlantic via a deal with Ed Carpenter Racing valid for the street and permanent circuits of the series car North American.

« I haven't signed anything yet and I won't in the near future, assured the former GP2 Series champion from Brazil where his future was one of the topics of conversation of the media day. I have received several phone calls from different teams involved in various championships but there is nothing concrete for the moment ».

Asked if IndyCar was a possible option in 2020, Hülkenberg responded in the positive while reaffirming his refusal to compete on ovals.

« I have too much respect for the guys who do this, he continued. It's not my thing. I would limit myself to traditional routes. I'm pretty relaxed. I want to end the season on a positive note then decompress and take time to reflect and see what I want to do, what seems interesting. I don't want to rush things just to ride somewhere ».

Hülkenberg, however, made it clear that he was not retiring from sport. “ I may not be on the F1 grid next year but I'm ready if an opportunity arises », concluded the winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2015.
