It is a tragic date which resonates beyond the framework of the Formula 1Everyone knows what he was doing on May 1, 1994, when Ayrton Senna went off the track on lap seven of the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Italy. The Brazilian died 31 years ago after a fatal accident while going straight on at Tamburello while traveling at over 300 km/h. His death will be announced later this afternoon after he was taken to hospital in Bologna.

The 1994 San Marino Grand Prix will forever remain in F1 history as one of the sport's cursed weekends. On Friday, Rubens Barrichello, a young Jordan driver who had only one full season in F1 at the time, miraculously survived a horrific crash during practice when his car flew into a tire wall. Roland Ratzenberger would not be so lucky: the Simtek team driver lost his life the next day during qualifying.

During the Grand Prix at Imola on Sunday, Ayrton Senna, who had started from pole position and was leading the race, suddenly went off track at Tamburello and hit the Tamburello wall, the upper wishbone of the right front suspension breaking and hitting the visor of the Brazilian's helmet. After being treated for several minutes by FIA and circuit doctors, the Williams driver was then airlifted to the hospital in Bologna (Italy) where his death was officially announced after 18:30 p.m., from irreversible brain damage.

Ayrton Senna has three world titles (1988, 1990 and 1991), 41 victories, 80 podiums and 65 pole positions in F1. Beyond the statistics, the Brazilian won the hearts of the public with his temperament, his debut at Toleman and Lotus and his thrilling duels with Alain Prost in McLaren. More than three decades after his passing, his legacy lives on. Ayrton Senna, always.

Not only is Senna, whose name sounds like a mantra, a legend, but it was one of the greatest traumas in F1, as the only world champion (and even triple World Cup winner) to die in a race. Rindt had only been declared champion posthumously. We thought it would never happen. F1 found itself decapitated, with not a single active world champion left, not a driver with more than a dozen victories to his name. We were starting almost from scratch. That's why there is definitely a before and after that May 1, 94. I was rehearsing with my group, forced to miss the race. When I got home late in the afternoon and learned of the accident, I felt bad, the feeling was very bad. When he died, I knew in advance that it was over. And that what I knew of F1 was gone. It took me a long time to get interested in it again, until the end of the 90s.
