By hiring Damon Hill, offering him Nigel Mansell's job, Frank Williams had created a surprise. Of course, the mustachioed man himself had given his verbal boost at the end of 92, imploring, through the press, his future ex-boss to give Graham's son a chance. "Those of you who have any power, make sure Williams signs a competent, fast driver. Damon Hill is the one. He will make life difficult for Cheers. He might even win races!” He was only half believed, thinking that he saw this as a way to offer his steering wheel to another Briton.
A matter of honor. Frank had a choice. After trying to get Patrese to reconsider, he approached Hakkinen, then Brundle. Contract difficulties for the former.driver? "He's not a qualifying expert, but he's a guarantee for points." Then came the Hill opportunity. His test driver. "Damon has virtually no racing experience, analyzed Frank. But he is fast and knows the team, the car and his technical programme well."The hesitation did not last. Hill was the chosen one. “It was my technicians who pushed me!”
