Ilott confirmed as reserve for Alfa Romeo

A team of Formula 1 can never be too careful. Alfa Romeo invented the concept of “additional reserve pilot”. This is the role that Callum Ilott, the outgoing vice-champion of the Formula 2.

The English driver will work in coordination with Robert Kubica as a reserve for the training based in Hinwil (Switzerland), and will replace the Pole when he is focused on his European Le Mans Series events (ELMS) with Team WRT.

In addition, Callum Ilott will drive the Alfa Romeo C41 during Free Practice 1 of the Portuguese Grand Prix in Portimao, Friday April 30. “The two sessions I have had with the team over the last two years have been extremely helpful in getting used to how an F1 team operates and I am confident that I can take over in my new role as reserve pilot, explains the Briton, who discovers the GT3 with Ferrari this season. I can’t wait to be in the car and help the team continue to progress. »

“I’m delighted to welcome Callum to our team: his journey through the promotion formulas has been impressive and he is undoubtedly one of the most talented young drivers to come., indicates Frédéric Vasseur, the team principal.

He has already worked with us, leaving a good impression each time thanks to his work ethic and good feedback, and I am convinced that he will be a very positive asset alongside Robert Kubica, who will be unavailable on several occasions because of his other races. »
