Ban on taking to the track in EL1 at the Nürburgring due to fog

Disappointment for the German fans who came to the Nürburgring to applaud the debut on a Grand Prix weekend of Mick Schumacher. The race management tried to postpone the inevitable by twice delaying the opening of the pit lane for this Free Practice 1 session.

After two postponements of 30 minutes each, Michael Masi had to face the facts: the fog hanging over the region led to the cancellation of the first driving session of the Eifel Grand Prix.

The track was undoubtedly passable because the precipitation remained measured but the circuit's medical helicopter could not take off and reach the emergency hospital assigned this weekend in the event of a serious accident. Security therefore logically won out.

Schumacher was not the only hopeful to take his first steps in an official role. Callum Ilott, his rival for the title in Formula 2 and acolyte within the Ferrari Driver Academy, was supposed to replace Romain Grosjean in Haas this Friday morning.

If the pit lane remained closed, that did not prevent a team like McLaren to perfect his pit stops, the session having not officially been canceled.

With the weather forecast not being much more encouraging for the rest of the day, we can wonder if any Formula 1 will turn on the Nürburgring this Friday. This unprecedented situation would give the teams a foretaste of what awaits them at Imola in 3 weeks, with the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix taking place over just 2 days (October 31-November 1).
