Jacques Villeneuve: “Doing like Webber is useless”

Jean-Eric Vergne must be sparkling if he wants to go to Red Bull in 2014. This is the advice given by Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 world champion, then interviewed by RMC Sports. Nothing surprising or new, at first glance. Except that between two sentences, the Canadian pilot and new consultant for Canal + had fun tackling Mark Webber by announcing that, concretely, this was not the example to follow.

“Jean-Eric Vergne must make a podium with the Toro Rosso, otherwise it’s useless”, declared the former pilot Williams. “The chances of seeing him at Red Bull in 2014 are slim but they are there”, believes Jacques Villeneuve. To play his luck to the fullest, the young Frenchman, who is about to start his second full season in F1 at Toro Rosso, will have to “to stand out from the crowd”. “If he just does what Webber did, that won't be enough. Without any brilliance on his part, they will put two other young people in the team, until the day they sell it. For them (Red Bull, editor’s note) this team is a burden. »
