Jean Todt evaluates the use of the V6 Turbo in Endurance for 2021

And if the prototypes of the World ChampionshipEndurance (WEC) were equipped with the power unit of the Formula 1 from 2021? This is the idea put on the table by the current president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), Jean Todd.

Present in Abu Dhabi for the last Grand Prix of the F1 season, the former director of the Team Ferrari would not refuse a partnership between the two world competitions. “Each category has its own rules. We should probably see if it is possible to establish synergies,” he explained for the EspnF website1.

“That would make sense. If we take three F1 engines for a year, that represents around 5 kilometers covered; the longest race in Endurance, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, also does 5 kilometers. And clearly, this would encourage other brands to engage in other disciplines”, like Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren indeed Red Bull, which has been forming a partnership with Aston Martin.

In 2021, brand new engine regulations must come into force in F1, based on a V6 Turbo block.
