Jenson Button took the right risk

While the track was still wet, at the start of the race, Jenson Button made the crazy bet of switching to slick tires. And, from the first seconds with these tires, the Briton was able to measure the risk of this decision, going sideways several times. But the track then quickly dried up and the pilot McLaren was able to scrounge up precious seconds on the single-seaters fitted with intermediate tires. The World Champion claims that this early pit stop was his, not his team's.

« It?s easier for a driver to feel and analyze the conditions in which he is operating, while the team is in the pits and watching television, Button says. I made this decision quickly, to return to the pits to put on slick tires. Covering 50 laps with a single set of tires was a risk but I felt good about it. »

Despite everything, there was a real risk since many areas of the circuit were still wet. “ I could have made a lot of mistakes because it was still very slippery, in fact that's what I did in the first turn. Then my pace was good. I managed to maintain this pace, set good times and escape when the others stopped. Given my position, I thought it was the best decision to make. »

For his second race with McLaren, Jenson Button managed to win, on the field of Lewis Hamilton. " It?s something very special, confirms Button. It took me a little time to feel good in the team, to get used to this car. I had to adapt on different levels. It really is a very special feeling. I hope to be able to build on this victory and continue on this path. »
