Jenson Button wants to help 'tweak' McLaren

After starting in F1 in 2000 with Williams, Jenson Button will take a step back by being replaced by the Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne, who will become the teammate of the double Spanish world champion Fernando Alonso in 2017.

The 2009 World Champion will however remain involved within the structure of Woking, as he announced when confirming his replacement by the 2 GP2015 Series champion.

“My job won't be to develop the car because I'm not going to drive it, specifies the Briton on the F1 website. I will listen to the comments of the drivers and I will try to help the team understand what the drivers mean, because sometimes it is not so easy in hot conditions.

My goal, or my job, will be to help build the team, refine the team. If you've watched a team for so long from one perspective, suddenly given the chance to step back and take another look, I'm sure there's a lot to learn. »

While the lines have been moving within McLaren for several months, with the arrival of Jost Capito, then the departure of Ron Dennis a few days ago and the recruitment of Zak Brown, McLaren and its engine manufacturer Honda seem to be counting on Button's experience to finally return to the forefront in 2017, a year which will see the technical regulations significantly revised.

Beyond his involvement at McLaren, Jenson Button also confirms that he does not want to remain inactive, both in and out of the car. Already mentioned, certain tracks are really close to the former Honda driver's heart.

“I'm in better shape than ever, Button recognizes. I aim to be a world champion in triathlon in my age group as an amateur, not as a pro. And I would like to race at Le Mans. THE rallycross is also on my to-do list. There are so many things I want to do. »
