If the 2022 calendar of the Formula 1 reports a 23-round campaign, there is no guarantee that it will not be modified during the season as has been the case on numerous occasions over the last two years. It is for this same reason that F1 management wants to protect its back with fallback solutions.

Among these famous fallback solutions we find circuits like Portimão (Portugal) or Istanbul (Turkey) which were brought in to replace Grands Prix, canceled due to the health crisis still present today. To these names, we must now add that of Jérez (Spanish) as confirmed by Juan Marín, vice-president of the council of Andalusia and advisor for Tourism, to the Spanish press agency EFE during the fair of tourism World Travel Market in London.

« We are first in the list of reservists, he reveals. From the moment a round falls through, we could enter the scene. » Juan Marín also clarified that the council of Andalusia is “ able » to respond favorably to possible “ changes to the route » whose costs would be between 3 and 5 million euros for the widening of turns 1 and 6 and the resurfacing of the track among others.

As a reminder, Jérez hosted F1 between 1986 and 1997 where during the last edition, Michael Schumacher for Ferrari and Jacques Villeneuve for Williams had been the protagonists of a controversial collision. More recently, the 2014 and 2015 winter tests were organized on the Andalusian circuit. Private sessions had also taken place there in recent years. Currently, the Iberian route hosts each year the MotoGP.

Perhaps an additional round in Europe in 2022... and still no stage on the African continent! When will Kyalami return to South Africa, another historic F1 circuit?
