The only South African to become F1 world champion at a time when South Africa had its own national F1 championship which was held at circuits in South Africa, Rhodesia and Mozambique and had introduced sponsorship in motorsport with Team Gunston, a means found by tobacco producers in Rhodesia to circumvent the boycott organized against the regime in force at the time!

Great gentleman unfortunately without a successor in his native South Africa! His sons Tomas and Toby did not have the talent of their father... you had to see him attack at the wheel of his R8 Gordini modified by the trainer Alconi from Johannesburg on all the circuits of South Africa, Rhodesia , Angola and Mozambique.
