The family of John Surtees has announced that the 1964 world champion F1 had just died at the age of 83. The Briton had been hospitalized since last month for respiratory failure.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband and father, John Surtees, indicated the champion's family in a press release. John was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. He was also one of the icons of motorsport and worked tirelessly until the creation of the Henry Surtees Foundation and the Buckmore Park Kart Circuit. »
John Surtees also distinguished himself on two wheels by winning the 500cc category several times. The Briton had 111 Grand Prix starts, 6 victories, 8 poles, 24 podiums and 11 fastest laps in the race. He evolved at Lotus, Cooper, Lola, Ferrari (with whom he won the title), Honda, BRM, McLaren and his own team in his name.
