Kobayashi signs with Sauber

Peter Sauber is gradually building his team for next season. After buying the Hinwill team from BMW following the withdrawal of the German manufacturer and receiving authorization from the FIA to enter the next World Championship F1, the leader of the eponymous team has just recruited his first driver for the 2010 season with the Japanese Kamui Kobayashi.

Peter Sauber indicated a few weeks ago that he was looking for a “ experienced pilot and another of the new generation. » With the signing of Kamui Kobayashi, the director of the Swiss firm therefore fulfills a first part of his objectives.

Competing in particular with Vitaly Petrov and Bertrand Baguette to occupy the “Rookie” seat, Kamui Kobayashi was finally chosen by the Swiss leader. His performances during the last two Grand Prix of the season in Brazil and Abu Dhabi did not leave the decision-makers at Sauber indifferent either. “ In the last two races of the season he had an unexpected chance to show his qualities and he was impressive “, explained Peter Sauber. “ I look forward to working with Kamui now. »

For his part, the 23-year-old Japanese was delighted to be offered this opportunity. “ Even before the start of my career, I dreamed of racing in F1. Now this dream comes true », declared the Japanese, 16th in the last GP2 Series Championship. “ I am very happy that my two races in 2009 allowed me to get a seat. I will do my best for Peter Sauber's team and I am proud to fly the colors of the Japanese flag high. »

The name of his future teammate should be revealed soon. Pedro de la Rosa and Nick Heidfeld could support the Japanese. As for the position of reserve driver, this should go to Belgian driver Bertrand Baguette.
