Kubica confirmed at Williams in 2019

Eight years after his last Grand Prix F1, Robert Kubica will return as a starter within the team Williams who confirmed it for the 2019 season in the paddock of the Abu Dhabi GP which is being held this weekend (as we announced to you in issue 2192 of AUTOhebdo).

“First of all, I would like to thank everyone who has helped me during this difficult time in my life over the last few years. It was quite a challenge to return to the F1 grid, but what seemed almost impossible finally became possible and I am delighted to finally be able to say that I will be on the grid in 2019”, commented the person concerned.

“It’s been a long road to get back here, but a new challenge begins with Williams on the track. It won't be easy, but with George and the rest of the team, we will do everything to get the team back on track. This season has been tough, but I have learned a lot and I want to thank Sir Frank and Claire (Williams) for this opportunity. »

The Pole, who saw his career end after his serious accident rally in 2011 leaving him with after-effects in his hand, will team up with rookie George Russell. He returned to the discipline last year as a reserve and development driver for the Grove team.

“We were all amazed by what he was able to do. This gave great credit to his strength of character and his desire to return to F1, added Claire Williams, Deputy Team Principal of Williams F1. He has become an established and respected member of the team this year by working behind the scenes. His level of determination is incredible. Robert's new role will be an important step for us in our goal to move up the hierarchy. At the same time, I am delighted to have a crew that combines youth and experience. »

Williams is the last team in the Manufacturers' Championship this season with only 7 points scored before the last GP of the season at the Yas Marina circuit.

The Grove team subsequently confirmed that Robert Kubica and George Russell would take part in the Pirelli test in Abu Dhabi next week.

Sergey Sirotkin was quick to react following his team's announcement, with the Russian finding himself without a steering wheel for the 2019 season.

“Unfortunately, I won't be racing in F1 next year, commented the Russian. It was a very long and very difficult year. Not everything worked out the way I wanted, but I continued to work and put all my energy into achieving what I felt I deserved. To be honest, I think I have produced a very decent job in the current situation. Thank you everyone for the support and comforting words, especially at the GP in Sochi, which touched me a lot. »
