Ron Dennis' tribute to Chris Amon

The sad news arrived this morning: Chris Ammon, winner of 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1996 alongside Bruce McLaren, and former driver of the Woking team in Can-Am, died at the age of 73 as a result of cancer.

Chris Amon defended the colors of Ferrari or even Matra in F1, and remained close to Ron Dennis, current president of McLaren Group, who wanted to pay tribute to him. “It is with deep sadness that I learned the news this morning of the passing of Chris Amon.

Chris started 96 Grands Prix, but didn't win a single one of them. It is fair to say that he was the greatest driver to ever win a race at the highest level. He came close several times, but it seemed his luck left him before he saw the checkered flag.

However, he won at Le Mans with Ford, exactly 50 years ago, with his teammate and friend Bruce McLaren, whose name still adorns the team to which I dedicate my professional life.

I did not see Chris for many years but I have very fond memories of him and would describe him as one of the nicest men I have met in my long career in motorsport.

For all these reasons, I want to take this opportunity to express the sincere condolences of the 3300 people at McLaren to the family and friends of a great New Zealander, a true gentleman, and one of the fastest racing drivers : the one and only Christopher Arthur Amon. May he rest in peace. »
