Italy does not want to repeat the Australian GP scenario

While the 2020 season of F1 is still at a standstill following the coronavirus epidemic, the organizers of the Grands Prix are trying to anticipate all possible scenarios to adapt to the situation.

Scheduled for the beginning of September, the Italian Grand Prix still has time to monitor the evolution of the pandemic but its organizers remain cautious about holding the event.

“We cannot afford to make mistakes like in Australia, where the Grand Prix was canceled while the public was already on the circuit, commented Angelo Sticchi Damiani, president of the Automobile Club of Italy, to Gazzetta dello Sport. It was a setback for everyone, from Liberty Media to the teams and local organizers. It would be a disaster if we restarted and had to shut down again. »

F1 has already canceled or postponed nine races while the GPs of France and Belgium are likely to suffer the same fate following government decisions.

“We face this situation with complete uncertainty and therefore we must exercise caution, added Angelo Sticchi Damiani. The priority is to understand what is happening in the countries hosting Grands Prix, and especially in Great Britain and Italy where most of the paddock comes from. »

The Monza circuit is located in Lombardy, a region particularly affected by Covid-19.
