F1 in Melbourne until 2035, F2 and F3 in Australia from 2023

Formula 1 and the organizers of the Australian Grand Prix have reached a new agreement to host F1 in Melbourne until 2035. Formula 2 and Formula 3 will also be present on the Albert Park circuit from 2023.

Thirteen more years! The Australian Grand Prix will remain in Melbourne, on the Albert Park circuit, until 2035, announced the authorities of the Formula 1. A contract extension which also includes the arrival of the Formula 2 and Formula 3 from 2023, a first on Australian soil. 

The 2022 edition of the Grand Prix in Melbourne attracted more than 419 spectators in 000 days, a historic record for a sporting event in Australia. Unwavering proof of the relationship between Australian fans and Formula 3, present in Melbourne since 1 and in Australia since 1996.

Over the past two years, the organizers of the Australian Grand Prix have made significant investments to improve the circuit. The route has been modified to encourage overtaking, particularly in the second sector. In addition, the paddock and pit lane were modified and modernized, which made it possible, for example, to increase the maximum speed in the pit lane to 80 km/h.

Melbourne and F1 until 2035: reactions

Stefano Domenicali, president of Formula 1, welcomed this new contract. “I am delighted to confirm that Melbourne and the Albert Park circuit will continue to be on the Formula 1 calendar until 2035. This race has always been a favorite for fans, drivers and teams. Melbourne is an incredible and vibrant international city, it’s a perfect connection for our sport. This year we saw a huge crowd and passionate people at the Grand Prix, we are very excited about what the future holds for us in Australia as our sport continues to grow. (…) We look forward to being back next season in Melbourne. »

Martin Pakula, Victorian Government Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, recalled the importance of F1 to the region. “The Australian Grand Prix has never been more popular, with more than 419 people heading to Albert Park for this year's race. We know how important this event is to our economy and that is why we have secured the longest contract extension for the Grand Prix since it took place in Melbourne. »

Andrew Westacott, chairman of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, hopes the contract extension will help grow motorsport in the region. “This is a sensational announcement that is just great for Melbourne and the state of Victoria. (…) We are proud of our strong relationship with Formula 1, together we will grow the sport in Australia and the wider Asia-Pacific region. The entire team is looking forward to taking the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix to new heights over the next 13 years. »
