F1 soon to have wider tires?

Paul Hembery, the sporting director of Pirelli, admitted in an interview with autosprint that the manufacturer of the F1 would not be opposed to install wider tires on future single-seaters. These more imposing wheels, like the F1 of the 1970s, could make their arrival in 2017 where a new regulation is being studied to improve the show.

“We have had discussions with Charlie (Whiting, the FIA racing director) because we are always open to the needs of the discipline. It will be very difficult to produce an entirely new tire in 2016, it is more realistic to think about 2017. This also corresponds to the end of our contract”, commented Paul Hembery to our Italian colleagues.

Bernie Ecclestone is still looking to replace the too discreet 6l turbo/hybrid V1.6 with a more powerful and noisier engine, also equipped with hybrid technology. But all aspects are under study since 18 inch tires had already been tested during a private test session last July at Silverstone (Great Britain).
