F1 will soon begin its metamorphosis

The Strategic Group of F1 which met this Thursday, May 14 in Biggin Hill (Great Britain) presented a series of measures which will change the face of F1 in order to restore the image of the discipline which has been losing momentum in recent years.

For 2016, teams will be able to freely choose two types of tires (of the four available) at each Grand Prix.

For 2017, the Strategic Group plans:

- Fastest F1 at a rate of 5 to 6 seconds per lap with aero upgrades, wider tires and lighter single-seaters
- the reintroduction of supplies, with a consumption limit always included in the regulations
- Power Units with Higher RPMs and Amplified Noise
- more aggressive lines

In the presence of Bernie Ecclestone, the executive director of F1, Jean Todt, the President of the FIA, and the six main teams: Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, Williams, McLaren and Force India, the F1 Strategy Group has established several avenues for reflection. Among the options studied, the format of the weekends could change et departures could be made without any assistance.

The press release from the F1 Strategic Group mentions “different scenarios studied for cost reduction” which will be evaluated with the paddock stables in the coming weeks, without setting up customer stables not even mentioned. On the other hand, stability should be at the level of the engine “due to the investments made”. These measures will be submitted to the F1 Commission and the FIA World Council whose next meeting will be held on July 10 in Mexico.

The addition of a 5th engine for the season, compared to 4 authorized in 2015, was rejected by the F1 Strategy Group.
