F1 to introduce six new TV visuals in 2021

6 new graphics will be added to the international broadcast beam of the Formula 1 in 2021.

Still designed in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), specialists in cloud computing services, machine learning, and real-time data analysis, these visuals will bring new information to viewers.

At the end of the year, the TV production team will have a range of 18 features to enrich sports coverage.

The 12 previous graphs made it possible to learn more about the probability of overtaking between two drivers, the speed of development of a car and a team during the season, or even the performance of the drivers in each type of corner (slow , fast, etc.).

Here is what the 6 new graphic overlays will offer:

  • Braking performance: available from this weekend at Imola, the functionality will analyze the quality of drivers' braking and the time saved in these crucial areas, based on corner entry speed, level of deceleration, and braking power (expressed in kWH). The forces absorbed by the pilot will also be indicated in G.
  • Because exploitation: This visual will indicate when the driver pushes his car to its limits during key moments of the race. The graphic will come into effect from the Canadian Grand Prix (June 11-13).
  • Energy Usage: As its name indicates in English, the visual will allow you to know how the energy of the powertrain is used during the GP depending on the scenarios (effort management, duel against another car, etc.). The battery charge level will also be visible. This feature will arrive for the British GP at Silverstone (July 16-18).
  • Start Analysis: This tool, available from the Italian GP in Monza (September 10-12), will make it possible to judge the quality of the drivers' starts and to visualize who did best when the lights went out.
  • Pitlane Performance: The feature will be unveiled at the Japanese GP in Suzuka (October 8-10) and will analyze the performance of each team in each of the phases that make up a pit stop, from the driver's entry into the pitlane to his exit.
  • Undercut Threat: This will be the last visual novelty introduced in 2021 – it will be during the Australian GP (November 19-21). The functionality will strengthen the tool Pit Strategy Battle by identifying drivers likely to be overtaken by a competitor who attempted an early stop to benefit from fresher tires.

To create these new graphs, AWS still relies on the approximately 300 sensors on board modern single-seaters and which generate 1,1 million data points every second, as well as on the history of previous races.
