FIA provides regulatory clarifications ahead of Austria

The FIA has issued a series of technical directives ahead of the start of the school year at Red Bull Ring in Austria at the beginning of July, with two races held in a few days in Spielberg.

The governing body thus sent the stables several documents covering in particular the energy recovery systems (ERS) of hybrid powertrains as well as the new oil consumption limit, set at 0,3 liters per 100 km in 2020 (compared to 0,6 liters in recent years).

Directive TD/018-20 thus describes the timing of the installation of a new encrypted current sensor to best measure the power of the ERS. The introduction of the system will be done gradually since it will initially only concern the drivers of a factory team and those of the teams which finished in the trifecta of the last Manufacturers' championship. The rest of the board will follow later.

Directive TD/019-20 specifies how federal controls on lowered oil consumption will be carried out. Some quickly interpreted these regulatory details as the first concrete manifestations of the private, secret and controversial agreement concluded last winter between the FIA and Ferrari about the Italian propeller in its 2019 specification.

Maranello was in fact committed to helping the Federation to “Improve the monitoring of all engines of Formula 1 ».
