A small change that could make a big difference in the future. At the start of the week, the FIA modified a passage in the International Sporting Code concerning the minimum age required to obtain a Super License and therefore to be able to compete in the World Championship. Formula 1.

Until then, a driver had to be at least 18 years old and have a driving license to join the grid. A rule in place since 2015 and the arrival of Max Verstappen in F1 at the age of 17. From now on, article 13.1.32 of appendix L of the International Sporting Code stipulates that “in the sole judgment of the FIA, a driver judged to have recently and consistently demonstrated exceptional ability and maturity in formula car competitions car can be granted a Super License at the age of 17. »

A clear path for Mercedes and Antonelli?

Therefore, the requirement to have a driving license to enter Formula 1 has been removed. That's good, the minimum age to obtain a driving license in Italy – country of birth of Andrea Kimi Antonelli – is 18 years old. The Italian, at the center of discussions to obtain a seat in Formula 1 from 2025 at Mercedes, could thus arrive in the discipline much earlier than expected!

The native of Bologna, who will celebrate his 18th birthday on August 25, could already land in Formula 1 today thanks to this new rule. Enough to fuel rumors of an arrival this season at Williams, replacing a Logan sargeant in trouble. Andrea Kimi Antonelli, last year's FRECA champion and current driver of Formula 2 at PREMA, already has the 40 points necessary to obtain a Super License.

If Mercedes denies being at the origin of this modification, the FIA had indeed confirmed last May that a team had requested the examination of a possible modification of the rule on the minimum age. Now that this age limit of 18 can be overcome, will Mercedes and Williams take the plunge and cause a new shock transfer in 2024?

18 years old next August 25 for AKA, I bet he will be in the second Williams from Zandvoort when he returns from vacation, so as not to disembark Sargeant too quickly!

For Antonelli it doesn't change anything, he turns 18 in 71 days!

With this new rule, AKA in the second Williams when it reopens for the summer break? August 25 in Zanvoort or much more symbolic in Monza on September 1?
