FIA confirms adoption of Halo for 2018

There will be a frontal protection system installed on single-seaters in 2018 in F1. Here is in fact the major decision rendered at the end of the meeting of the Strategic Group of the discipline held this Wednesday.

All the teams entered in the championship were there, Renault, Sauber, Haas et Toro Rosso being represented by observers, alongside other member teams Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, McLaren, Williams and Force India.

Tested at Silverstone by Sebastian Vettel, the Shield frontal protection system was not a great success, with the Scuderia Ferrari driver admitting to having been dizzy. A few days later, here is The Halo returns to the forefront, as the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile confirms that this system will be introduced in 2018.

« With the help of the teams, certain features of its design will be further improved. After developing and evaluating a large number of devices over the past five years, it has become clear that the Halo has the best overall safety performance. » mentions the press release.

Motorization, costs and spectacle

Several other subjects were also discussed during this meeting, including the presentation to the teams of the results of the two meetings held in Paris with engine manufacturers involved in motorsport, with a view to motorization for 2021.

The question of costs did not fail to resurface. « A new approach to cost control was presented and received unanimous support, specifies the FIA. A dedicated working group made up of representatives of the commercial rights holders, the FIA ​​and the teams, will be responsible for proposing innovative solutions aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the sport in the years to come. »

Finally, the improvement of the spectacle also emerged in the discussions with, with this in mind, proposals concerning new sporting rules. Specific studies will be launched on this subject.
