FIA confirms engine deal

After long negotiations between the various stakeholders, the debate on the question of the costs of the Power Units, the engine supply, the convergence of performances and the sound produced by the V6 turbo / hybrid blocks, finally found a solution this Friday . In a press release released this Friday, the FIA confirmed that a global agreement had been reached with measures coming into force from 2017.

COSTS

It was agreed to significantly reduce in the coming years the price of supplying engines to customer teams as well as the costs incurred by manufacturers.

– In 2017, the engine price for customer teams will be reduced by €1 million per season compared to 2016.

– From 2018, the annual price of the supply will be reduced by an additional €3 million.

– The modifications made to the Sporting and Technical Regulations in 2017 and 2018 will limit the cost of engines, with the number of engines allocated per driver and per season being gradually reduced.

SUPPLY

The supply of engines to customer teams will be guaranteed, the approval procedure including a “supply obligation” which will apply in the event that a team finds itself without an engine manufacturer.

PERFORMANCE CONVERGENCE

The new agreement provides for a series of measures aimed at achieving convergence of performance.

– The token system will be abolished from 2017.

– Restrictions will be introduced in 2017 and 2018 on the materials, dimensions and weight of engine parts as well as on the boost pressure.

ARE

The manufacturers are currently carrying out a research program aimed at improving the sound of the engines, with the aim of implementation by 2018 at the latest.

The FIA is also committed to ensuring the stability of engine regulations and maintaining in their current form the governance structure of Formula One for the period 2017-2020.
