This was one of the thorny questions in recent years in the paddock. Implemented in 2014 by the FIA, this famous Q2 rule required drivers qualified in Q3 to start Sunday's Grand Prix with the set of tires used to achieve their best time during the 2nd part of qualifying.

The goal was then to try to cause a strategic gap between the teams, sometimes encouraging them to take more risks in view of the race the next day, not really to everyone's taste. Faced with this rule, some drivers preferred to start 11th rather than qualifying in Q3 to start 10th without a choice of tires for Sunday. It's now ancient history.

The FIA has in fact put an end to this rule a few days before the first official tests of the year in Barcelona (February 23 to 25). When the regulations for the 2022 season are published Formula 1, the body simply crossed out the paragraph concerning this obligation (page 37 of the document below paragraph l) so often criticized within the paddock which could favor the best teams according to the echoes heard.

From the Bahrain Grand Prix (March 18 to 20), drivers who have secured their ticket for Q3 will therefore be free to choose their tires for the start of the race on Sunday.
