Commission Day F1 on the sidelines of the last Grand Prix of the season in Abu Dhabi. On the menu for this final meeting: the future of F1, heated blankets, and the evolution of DRS. Here's a recap!

Review of regulatory and judicial processes

This is not a change for 2023 but for 2024. The Commission has confirmed that the FIA intends “ undertake a comprehensive review of the Sporting Regulations for 2024 as part of its ongoing commitment to the evolution of its regulatory processes ". During this review, the FOM (Fomula One Management) and the teams will be consulted. The first results are awaited “ by April 2023 » . The FIA for its part will carry out a general review of its judicial process also for 2024.

Updated driving in wet conditions

After receiving various feedback regarding very poor visibility in wet conditions with the new single-seaters, the FIA launched a study to try to reduce water spray when this extreme situation arises. The study focuses on five different points:

  • Implementation of a standard body kit, aimed at eliminating projections when drivers ride on wet surfaces with reduced fairing above the wheels (wheel arches).
  • Understand the volume of water sucked up by the flat bottom tunnels to understand its importance and consequences.
  • Ensure that the design does not unduly interfere with tire changes during pit stops.
  • Look for other types of improvements such as additional lights to improve visibility.
  • Devices to be installed only before a race or during a red flag due to extreme wet conditions.

Engine penalties

Discussions are continuing to make the grid penalty system more dissuasive and prevent teams from taking sanctions voluntarily.

Tire Heating Blankets

The objective of the FIA and FOM remains to permanently remove the heating blankets in 2024. However, the Commission has decided to postpone any final decision until July 2023. after discussions and various feedback from the pilots ”, in order to collect additional data and get more feedback on the trials to fully inform the conclusions.

Using DRS

The Commission validated a proposal to try to bring the peloton closer together with the aim of tightening the races by bringing forward the activation of the DRS from the end of the first lap of the race (Sprint included), or from the restart after the intervention of the Safety Car. The solution will be tested during each Sprint Race in 2023 with a view to introducing it for good in 2024.

Parc Fermé for Sprint weekends

Discussions have taken place regarding an update to simplify the Parc Fermé process on weekends that include a Sprint Race.

Compensation in the event of an accident

The FIA announces that an agreement has been reached around a simplification of compensation concerning damage linked to incidents taking place during Sprint Races. Instead of requesting a refund, teams will have a fixed amount each Sprint weekend. The allocation would thus increase from 150.000 to 300.000 euros from 2023.

Technical and financial regulations

Minor changes to the 2023 technical and financial regulations were unanimously approved. In addition, regulations introducing additional, stricter requirements for the strength of roll bars have been finalized for introduction in 2024.
