FIA and Ferrari reach private, secret deal over Italian engine

There were 10 big minutes left in these 2020 winter tests when the FIA sent a lunar press release as clear as crystal.

We learn that the governing body carried out a series of “ very in-depth technical analyzes » about how the powertrain works Team Ferrari, without specifying which version of the Italian engine was the subject of this in-depth federal investigation and in what context.

Both parties ultimately “ reached an agreement » the details of which will remain secret. The FIA's cryptic message further specifies that a number of " technical commitments aimed at improving the monitoring of all engines of Formula 1 » on future seasons were taken.

Ferrari will also help the FIA in “ its other regulatory missions in Formula 1 as well as in its research activities on biofuels and CO2 emissions ».

Contacted by AUTOhebdo, the Scuderia clarified that it was a “ old affair » which did not concern its 2020 propeller.

We will remember that last year there were persistent doubts surrounding the legality of the Ferrari engine in the second half of the season. Some suspected the Italian team of circumventing the flow meter which monitors compliance with the fuel flow limit, set at 100 kg per hour.

By cleverly asking for clarification on this sensitive feature of V6 turbo hybrids, Red Bull had pushed the FIA to legislate by sending a series of technical directives. Max Verstappen had outright accused the Scuderia of cheating after the fall in the Scuderia's performances recorded in the wake of the publication of the federal calls to order.

No official complaint had been made by Maranello's rivals but parts of the fuel systems of three cars, including a Ferrari and a Haas powered by Ferrari, were the subject of a federal seizure after the Brazilian Grand Prix to ensure that all systems were in compliance with the law.

Is this private and secret agreement the consequence of this investigation? Has the FIA discovered an irregularity or disputed processes on the Italian propeller? Between the lines, we understand in any case that the alternative to this compromise would have taken both parties into legal territory.
