The FIA doesn't want to waste time with the Halo

The Halo, this safety system installed above the cockpit, was tested for the first time by the Team Ferrari during winter testing in Barcelona with Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen. Despite some criticism of it in the paddock mainly due to its lack of aesthetics, the majority were favorable to its introduction.

Laurent Mekies, the director of safety at the FIA, is obviously in favor of the Halo. The former engineer Toro Rosso is now campaigning for rapid progress in research so that the device is ready in time for 2017.

“We are doing everything we can to integrate it as quickly as possible”, declared Laurent Mekies to the FIA Auto magazine. “Research will focus on visibility or extrication. So I expect the validation tests to be done within the next six months. »

The main concern concerns the development of future single-seaters which will have to take into consideration the addition of such an element. “The actual deadline is based on the time teams need to modify their cars and our ability to assess any related issues”, said the Frenchman.
