The thaw in the development of the 6l turbo/hybrid V1.6 was confirmed by the FIA in a letter sent to the teams. After long discussions leading to unanimous agreement, the Federation relied on an imprecision in the regulations which does not provide precise information on an engine approval date.
This weakness first highlighted by James Allison, the technical director of the Team Ferrari, has allowed the FIA to lift the freeze on the development of Power Units. This freedom should allow Ferrari and Renault to reduce their delay on the block Mercedes.
Honda, however, is the big loser from this decision. If Mercedes can continue its development, the Japanese brand will have to approve its engine before the end of February, due to its status as a new manufacturer.
