The “show” offered to the brave who braved the cold and humidity to come and see Grand Prix single-seaters in action in the Eifel massif this Friday logically pushed the FIA to work on fallback solutions.
The runs on the opening day of the Eifel Grand Prix were indeed abandoned, not because the track was impassable due to rain, but due to thick and persistent fog.
The latter prevented the medical helicopter from taking off and reaching “ each hospital mentioned in the competition medical questionnaire » in a period of time which cannot “ exceed a duration of around 20 minutes ”, as stipulated in Appendix H to the International Sports Code.
« The forecast looks better tomorrow but we are working on different contingency plans in case we are in a similar situation, confided FIA race director Michael Masi. We are finalizing them as I speak to you. We will communicate our findings to everyone in due course ».
La F1 had experienced a similar scenario at the 2017 Chinese Grand Prix. Instead of bringing the race forward by a day, as was mentioned, the essential medical equipment was ultimately transported to hospitals located less than 20 minutes away by ambulance.
