FIA clarifies rule on defensive braking maneuvers

It was via a note sent to the stables that the rules on “defensive maneuvers” were clarified. Several episodes during the season, notably with Max Verstappen in Japan facing Lewis Hamilton have apparently pushed the FIA to reconsider this part of the regulations.

“Article 27.5 of the Sporting Regulations states that: “no car may be driven in a manner which may be potentially dangerous to other drivers. In addition, Article 27.8 prohibits any maneuver likely to disturb other drivers, such as any abnormal change of direction.

Knowing this, and with the exception of any maneuver authorized by article 27.6, a change of direction when braking, which results in another driver having to perform an avoidance maneuver, will be considered abnormal and therefore potentially dangerous for other pilots. This may be reported to the commissioners. »
