FIA scraps standard brake systems for 2021

After the gearboxes, the brakes. The FIA announced this Friday that it had suspended its official call for tenders to introduce standard elements on the brake system of the 2021 single-seaters.

In its desire for standardization, the regulatory body launched a call for applications at the end of April in order to find a single supplier for the pads, discs, calipers, master cylinder and brake-by-wire system (operated brakes). electronic).

Several stables, Ferrari in the lead, have since continued to speak out against the standardization desired by the regulatory body. In view of this umpteenth renunciation, one might believe that the rebels have won a new battle but it is rumored that the cancellation is the result of a quarrel between the two brake suppliers of the paddock: the French Carbone Industrie and the Italian Brembo, which had been pre-selected by the FIA.

« To enable further analysis of the performance of F1 2021 in real conditions, the FIA has decided to delay the potential introduction of a single supplier for brake system elements and friction materials, the governing body justified itself in a press release.

The regulatory upheaval planned for 2021 and the teams' interpretation of it will have an impact on several aspects of future single-seaters. Given the crucial role that brakes play in terms of performance and safety, the FIA has decided to cancel its calls for tenders until new studies can be carried out.

The FIA would like to thank Brembo, which had been pre-selected and had provided a very comprehensive file which met the criteria defined in the call for tenders ».

At this rate, we will still end up wondering if anything will really change in F1 in 2021…
