The FIA positions itself against Mercedes and Pirelli

The FIA published a press release after the Monaco Grand Prix to give its position in the matter of the tests carried out by Pirelli and Mercedes between May 15 and 17 at the Catalunya circuit. If both parties defended themselves by affirming that the tests had been carried out in accordance with the clauses signed between the Italian manufacturer and the Federation, many points were transgressed. “At the beginning of May, the FIA was asked by Pirelli if it was possible to carry out development testing on the tires with a team using the current single-seaters. According to the exclusivity contract which binds the FIA with the sole manufacturer, Pirelli was allowed to carry out 1000km of tests with any team and for each team to receive this proposal. »

The Federation highlights the points which have not been respected in the stipulated clauses. “Pirelli and Mercedes AMG were warned by the FIA that such a development test could only be possible if it was carried out by Pirelli and not by the team that would bring the car and driver. They were also warned that these trials must be offered to each team in order to ensure the same opportunities and thus respect sporting fairness. » But the surprise comes from the fact that the FIA assures that it was not informed of the progress of the tests. “Following this communication, the FIA has not received any further information regarding a possible test by Pirelli or Mercedes AMG. Additionally, the FIA has not received any confirmation that all teams had been offered an opportunity to take part in testing. »

The FIA takes this matter seriously, which tarnishes the victory of Nico Rosberg and Mercedes at the Monaco Grand Prix. The German team and the Italian manufacturer therefore risk receiving very heavy sanctions while Pirelli had threatened to leave the F1 in the Monaco paddock. “With regard to the sporting regulations, and taking into account the principles of fairness, it should be remembered that the international sporting code allows the FIA to consider bringing the matter before the International Tribunal. The Court could decide to impose penalties which would replace any penalty from the commissioners. Such procedures would be carried out within the framework of the FIA's disciplinary and judicial laws. »

AUTOhebdo will return in detail to the Pirelli / Mercedes affair in its next issue, available from Tuesday in digital version on all platforms, and on newsstands on Wednesday.
