The starting grid for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

After a year subscribing to 2nd and 3rd places in qualifications, Max Verstappen (Red Bull) has finally succeeded in taming the Mercedes. At Yas Marina, the Dutchman took his first pole of the season after a thrilling session in which he beat Valtteri Bottas of 25 thousandths and Lewis Hamilton of 56.

Behind the usual leading trio, it is Lando Norris (McLaren) who stood out. By setting the 4th time, the Englishman equaled his best performance of the season (Austrian GP) in the exercise. His teammate Carlos Sainz validated the progress of the Woking team by placing 6th just behind Alex Albon (Red Bull). Enough to allow McLaren to still dream of 3rd place Manufacturers.

Tenth at the end of Q3, Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri) took advantage of the three-place penalty from Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) to move up to 9th place. The Monegasque fell back to 12th place allowing the Renault byEsteban Ocon et Daniel Ricciardo to go 10th and 11th.

For his last with Ferrari, Sebastian Vettel is only 13th on the grid, a position which further demonstrates the difficulties encountered by the Scuderia throughout the season.

back with Williams after a weekend spent at Mercedes, George Russell was unable to pass the threshold of Q1 and will start 16th ahead of Pietro Fittipaldi (Haas), his teammate Nicholas latifi and the penalized Sergio Pérez (Racing Point) and Kevin Magnussen.
