On the Gilles Villeneuve route, where conditions were tricky, Max Verstappen distinguished himself by signing the 15e career pole position, its 14e on a different circuit. Helped by the absence of Charles Leclerc who will start at the back of the grid for the Canadian Grand Prix this Sunday after an engine penalty, the reigning world champion left nothing to chance.
Very comfortable on the wet and drying Canadian tarmac, Max Verstappen set a time of 1'21"299. On the line, the Batavian was never worried since Fernando Alonso, 2e under the checkerboard, finished more than 6 tenths behind. Carlos Sainz was unable to join the fight for pole in the absence of his teammate and was content with 3e place almost 8 tenths behind the poleman of the Canadian Grand Prix.

In pain since the start of the weekend, Lewis Hamilton took advantage of the difficult track conditions to climb into 4e position with a best lap in 1'22"891. When the checkered flag was presented, the seven-time champion was ahead of both drivers Haas with Kevin Magnussen 5e et Mick Schumacher 6e, the best qualifying performance of his career.
The only driver to have tried the gamble on soft tires at the end of Q3, George Russell was finally trapped and was unable to improve his mark, remaining from 8e place behind Esteban Ocon and in front Daniel Ricciardo and Guayu Zhou.

If Max Verstappen brought a 3e pole position in the clan Red Bull this season, Sergio Pérez has not passed the threshold of Q2. Made a mistake at 3e corner, the Mexican was forced to end his qualifying after finishing his race in the Tecpro. He will leave 13e.

Although 15e on the timesheet, Charles Leclerc will start at the back of the grid for this Canadian Grand Prix. Forced to change engine, the pilot Ferrari will start from the 19e place right in front Yuki tsunoda also penalized for the same reason. The Monegasque is however better placed since he participated in Q1 of qualifying unlike the Japanese.
The start of the Canadian Grand Prix will be given at 20:00 p.m. (French time) this Sunday. Visit AUTOhebdo to follow the race in live text.
