At the end of a very close qualifying session, it was Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) who took pole position ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton.
With a lap in 1'18"348, the Finn beat the Englishman by only 7 thousandths to start for the 17th time in his career in first position. In difficulty and hampered by traffic, Max Verstappen (Red Bull) signed the 3rd time.
Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) and Carlos Sainz Sainz (Ferrari) complete the Top 5. The latter also dominated his teammate Charles Leclerc in the qualifying exercise for the first time since the start of the season. The Monegasque is 8th, sandwiched between Lando Norris (McLaren) and Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri).
After a mixed Friday, Esteban Ocon (Alpine) showed a completely different side in qualifying, obtaining the 6th best time while his teammate Fernando Alonso is only 13th.
Still not confident with his new frame, Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) was eliminated in Q1. The Australian could not do better than a 16th time and will therefore start from the back of the peloton this Sunday.
