Sent into the wall while driving at a moderate pace, Nicholas Latifi clearly targets his compatriot Lance Stroll as the author of the collision in Q1 in Australia.

The increase in average speeds on the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne (Australia) could lead to fears of incidents during qualifying practice this Saturday, April 9. This was the case from Q1, but in unusual circumstances.

Both on track in a slow lap before making a final attempt in the first phase of qualifying, Nicholas latifi (Williams) and Lance stroll (Aston Martin) collided.

A turn of the wheel car green just when the navy blue car wanted to overtake gave rise to this avoidable accident. With his left rear wheel torn off, Nicholas Latifi hit the wall and could not go any further, much to his incomprehension.

“From my point of view, it is very clear what happened, he explained on Canal+ once he returned to the paddock. I have already seen the incident again on video; This confirms that it's not my fault. There was room inside (the trajectory). I was in a preparation lap before setting a time. Lance wasn't in for a fast ride either. He robbed (his steering wheel) towards me. »

Another sequence adds to the bizarreness of the event. Two turns upstream, Nicholas Latifi had moved aside to let his compatriot pass…

“I initially let him pass because I thought he was in a timed lap,” said the Toronto native. When I realized he was slowing down, I wanted to regain my position. It's really unfortunate what happened. »

The race stewards have opened an investigation into the collision, but this will not change much for Nicholas Latifi, who will start the Australian Grand Prix from the back of the grid, at 7 a.m. French time on Sunday April 10.
