If the future of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone is often called into question, British Racing Drivers’ Club letter to members this month once again sowed doubt on the prospects of the circuit.
The BRDC, owner of the English track, issued a statement to respond to the speculation which has resumed since the publication of the letter.
“The BRDC would like to clarify recent media reports suggesting that discussions have not been successful and that the British Grand Prix will end after 2019. These reports are false and speculative.”, wrote BRDC President John Grant.
“Our aim is to preserve the British Grand Prix at Silverstone for many years to come, but obviously we can only do this if it makes economic sense. »
“As I have previously stated, we will study for the next six months whether we should communicate our intention to exercise a termination of contract which runs until 2019. No decision has been or will be made until in mid-July. During this period, we will consult all the organizations involved, privately I hope, to find different avenues of work to arrive at a sustainable proposal. »
Silverstone has hosted the British Grand Prix continuously since 1987. The circuit was refurbished in 2011. Donington Park promoters have already indicated they do not want to replace Silverstone if the contract is broken.
