Mercedes rims case settled according to Charlie Whiting

The rims Mercedes will have caused a lot of talk at the end of the season. The German team had introduced an innovative concept but had asked the FIA to confirm its legality after Japan.

The governing body of the F1 had found nothing to complain about outside of Mexico, but the design had nevertheless not been revised again. Toto wolff, boss of Mercedes-AMG F1 explained after the last Brazilian event on this subject which many link to the slightly less good results of the W09s during the last races, despite the victory at Interlagos of Lewis Hamilton.

“We don't want to leave any variables for a championship that we can win, Wolff admitted. We did not want to have a claim with a possible judgment in the coming weeks when we feel that these areas are not fundamentally responsible for the performance.

I can assure you that our assessment is that the problems we encountered in these three races were not related to these areas. It's more the overall concept. »

Charlie Whiting, FIA race director, also provided the point of view of the sport's officials. “We think the problem is resolved.

The reason they were allowed to take the matter to the stewards in Mexico was because in the sporting code they were asking to settle something. » comments Whiting, specifying that the scenario had not arisen in Brazil and that the case would undoubtedly be studied in the off-season.

“If they came back with the same question, the stewards probably wouldn't do it because last time it didn't solve the problem. We just gave technical advice. We will continue to use this notice in similar cases. »
