Vladimir Putin's political decisions continue to have enormous consequences on Russian sport in recent days. After the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian leader's army, the FIA and the Formula 1 imposed a series of different sanctions against his country.
As if the cancellation of the 2021 edition was not enough, F1 has this time decided to end its collaboration with the promoter of the Russian Grand Prix, simply breaking the contract that linked them until in 2025.
« The decision was taken this week as part of the discussions that followed last week's announcement regarding the 2022 Grand Prix, announces F1 in its press release. Formula 1 can confirm it has terminated its contract with the Russian Grand Prix promoter, meaning Russia will no longer host a race in the future »
This is another hard blow that Russia is suffering after the numerous sanctions imposed against its athletes in recent days. After nine editions in Sochi, the Grand Prix was to be relocated to Saint Petersburg from 2023. This will therefore no longer be the case.
Concerning the only Russian driver on the grid, Nikita mazepin, the FIA has decided not to exclude him but he will not be able to wear a Russian flag in sporting events (suit, helmet, etc.). The representative of Haas will not, however, have the right to compete in the British Grand Prix. Motorsport UK, the English motorsport federation, recently announced that no driver whose license has been issued by the Russian federation is allowed to participate in a motorsport-related event in the United Kingdom.
