The 2021 Spanish Grand Prix behind closed doors

La Formula 1 will perform again in front of empty stands during the Spanish Grand Prix (May 7-9), in accordance with local health recommendations. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya announced this Saturday in an official press release.

The Catalan Civil Protection Office has indicated at the Montmeló route that the reception of spectators, even in limited numbers, would be impossible, under the restrictions currently in force in the region.

« It is impossible to establish with certainty that the epidemic situation will allow a relaxation of the rules by May 7, 8, and 9, explains the press release. The latter strictly regulate travel at the local level. These measures could prevent fans who are not from Vallès Oriental from accessing the circuit.

Furthermore, neither the latest official communications from the Department of the Interior and Health of the Catalan government, nor the epidemic situation, nor the occupancy rate of beds in hospitals, suggest an update of current measures. .

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya logically undertakes to reimburse ticket holders for the 2021 Spanish Grand Prix.

After a 2020 season played mainly behind closed doors, the 2021 campaign opened in front of a limited number of vaccinated or immunized fans in Bahrain. The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, 2nd round of the year, is currently taking place without fans at Imola. This will also be the case in Baku for the Azerbaijan GP (June 4-6).

The other promoters have not yet communicated officially but F1 hopes for a gradual relaxation of health measures as global vaccination bears fruit.
