Last July, Vanessa Maes, boss of the Belgian Grand Prix, was very clear about the future of the event she manages. In agreement with the political authorities, we are fighting to obtain a multi-year contract without alternation from 2026,” she confided.
Almost six months later, she won her case… but not completely. While Vanessa Maes' wish was to keep the Belgian Grand Prix for the long term starting in the 2026 season, she ultimately couldn't tick all the boxes. The multi-year contract extension was granted to the event held in the Toboggan des Ardennes, but it couldn't escape rotation.
Indeed, this new contract ensures that Spa-Francorchamps will be on the calendar for 4 of the next 6 seasons. Formula 1 : 2026, 2027, 2029 and 2031. It now remains to define the other Grand Prix with which the Belgian one will alternate, namely for the 2028 and 2030 campaigns.
« Spa-Francorchamps is rightly regarded by drivers and fans alike as one of the best circuits in the world and has been the scene of some incredible moments during its many Formula 1 seasons., highlights Stefano Domenicali. In recent years, significant work has been carried out to improve the facilities and the overall fan experience, and I would like to pay tribute to the promoter and the Walloon government for their dedication and unconditional support for Formula 1 in Belgium. »

As Director of Spa Grand Prix, I think Vanessa Maes knows exactly what she is talking about and what she is doing...

I totally agree, but how can we fight against the petrodollars of Mohamed Ben Salmane who wants a second Grand Prix in Saudi Arabia after the 2029 Asian Winter Olympics in the middle of the desert mountains and the 2034 Football World Cup? And what about the autocrats ready to spend millions like for the Rwanda GP? It's difficult for historic circuits to make their voices heard...

Very good news for the future calendar and the real circuits. Hoping that the alternation is actually in Europe and concerns another real circuit and not one of these damn "made by Hermann Tilke" tracks in an autocratic country doing greenwashing with dollars or petrodollars!
