The Grand Prix of Miami (Florida) will have caused a lot of ink to be spilled, due to its fake marina, its horde of VIPs, or its degraded asphalt in the bends. However, what we cannot blame for this new round of the calendar Formula 1, this is its success in the United States.
Indeed, the victory of Max Verstappen (Red Bull) in front Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) was watched by 2,58 million people on ABC. This is unheard of for an F1 race broadcast live in Uncle Sam’s country! The record for the most viewed GP goes to the 2002 Monaco Grand Prix, broadcast in delay on the ABC channel (2,78 million viewers).
Compared to the United States Grand Prix contested at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas, the Miami Grand Prix recorded an audience more than twice as large as the 2021 edition (1,23 million). On average, F1 increased by 53% in audience share over the first five rounds of the 2022 season compared to 2021 (1,4 million average compared to 922).
