The Russian Grand Prix Formula 1, 17th round of the 2022 world championship scheduled for September 25, is canceled. Following the Russian Federation's invasion of Ukraine, the ten teams decided that they would not travel to the Sochi Autodrome in the fall. F1 endorsed this decision and announced that holding the event is impossible. Thursday evening in the paddock, a few hours before the meeting between the 10 main teams, the possibility of seeing Turkey re-enter the calendar, replacing Russia was mentioned.

“The FIA Formula 1 World Championship visits countries around the world with the positive vision of uniting people and bringing nations together. We observe the situation in Ukraine with sadness and shock, remaining hopeful for a quick and peaceful resolution. This Thursday evening, Formula 1, the FIA and the teams discussed the position of our sport. We conclude that it is impossible to organize the Grand Prix in the current circumstances,” writes F1.

This Thursday, voices were already raised in the paddock to contest the holding of the Russian event, organized in Sochi since 2014, following its massive military intervention in Ukraine. Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) notably declared that, whatever happened, he would not go to Russia: « I'm shocked. It’s horrible what’s happening. My opinion is that you should not go to Russia. I wouldn't go there. I think it is wrong to compete in a race in this country. » Max Verstappen, just the reigning champion, had shifted gears, indicating that it was not normal to compete in a race in a country at war.

Earlier in the day, UEFA, the executive body of European football, withdrew the organization of the Champions League final in Saint Petersburg in favor of Saint-Denis and the Stade de France. Formula 1 in turn reacts by depriving Russia of its Grand Prix, surrounding uncertainties over the future holding of the meeting, which must take place at Igora Drive from 2023.
