On April 28, 1996, Jacques Villeneuve reached a major milestone in his young career at the Nürburgring. By winning the European Grand Prix, the driver Williams scored his first victory in Formula 1, at the end of a tense duel with Michael Schumacher (Classic Ferrari for sale), the national hero.

At this point in the season, Villeneuve was still a rookie in F1. He was only competing in his fourth Grand Prix. Yet, he had already come close to victory in the opening round in Australia, before his FW18 suffered an oil leak that relegated him to second place.

Qualifying on the front row, he capitalized on a poor start by his teammate Damon Hill to take the lead from the very first meters. By the fifth lap, the Canadian already had a four-second advantage over David Coulthard, who was then in second place. Behind him, the race heated up with a group of drivers including Barrichello, Schumacher, and Hill, while Villeneuve gradually increased his lead. By the end of the first stint, the gap to Coulthard had even reached 14 seconds.

Michael Schumacher, having restarted earlier than his rivals for his first pit stop, began to close the gap to the leader thanks to a much faster pace. Within a few laps, his deficit shrank to just eight seconds. Outperforming the Canadian's Williams, the Ferrari driver caught up with Villeneuve and started lap 38 in direct contact, without being able to find a way past. He pitted six laps later for a second visit.

The return to the track proved costly, with Hill acting as a hindrance at the decisive moment. Villeneuve, who had also pitted, maintained his lead without yielding an inch. On lap 51, Schumacher closed the gap and launched a final attack. Despite constant pressure, the rookie held firm, kept his cool, and secured the European Grand Prix. After a breathtaking battle, only seven-tenths of a second separated the two drivers. Jacques Villeneuve was exhausted, and Damon Hill's physiotherapist, Erwin Göllner, had to intervene so that he could lift his trophy on the podium.

Beyond the raw result, this victory has a strong symbolic significance. Villeneuve is not only the son of Gilles, the F1 driver who died fourteen years earlier during qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix. He, in turn, becomes a Formula 1 Grand Prix winner. This victory thus marks the beginning of a series of eleven career wins, all achieved with Williams between 1996 and 1997, the year of his title.

Yes, I remember that glorious day when the son made a name for himself and held his own against Schumacher without any underhanded tactics – none of that in the Villeneuve family. Finally, someone who could stop him.

1996, a season in which a rookie won his first Grand Prix after just four races on the home turf of their German rivals, and went on to win four more. Not all rookies can boast such a feat! A sure sign of his talent, as he went on to become World Champion in 1997 in only his second year in F1.
