Single engine mode introduced at Monza

The stables of Formula 1 were awaiting a technical directive from the FIA confirming the introduction of a single engine mode for qualifying and the race between the Barcelona and Spa-Francorchamps meetings.

The document was received this Friday, like AUTOhebdo obtained confirmation of this. However, it is specified that the measure, which did not fail to provoke a reaction in Catalonia last week, will only be effective from the Italian Grand Prix (September 4-6). Reason given: the preparation time necessary to calibrate the thrusters on the test bench.

The FIA recalls that it is concerned to see the multiplication of engine modes and their use representing an infringement of technical and sporting regulations. Juggling between the different maps, on instructions from engineers on the radio, can in fact be compared to a piloting aid.

The regulatory body, whose means of control have been greatly strengthened in recent months but remain non-exhaustive, also recognizes that the complexity of engine modes makes technical checks difficult.

In other words, the FIA no longer wants us to delve into the lines of code of a myriad of software to find out whether a car is legal or not.

From Monza, each driver will therefore only be able to use one engine mode between the qualifying session and the race, except in the following cases: launch lap, return to the pits, or grid entry, period Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car.

An adjustment to the engine map will also be tolerated in the event of a duly justified reliability alert. Any unexplained change in engine mode will, however, be reported to the event commissioners.

Remember that the FIA technical directives only have an advisory value. Stewards nevertheless tend to refer to these documents when rendering their verdict.
