The Italian circuit, owned by Ferrari, could host F1 for the first time in its history this season if the Coronavirus pandemic forces the sport to stay longer in Europe.

Mugello could host a Grand Prix in 2020

For exactly a week, Formula 1 has a 2020 calendar. Finally, only one part: the European section, which will open in Austria on July 5 and will see no less than 8 races in 10 weeks until Monza on September 6.

What will happen on the evening of the Italian Grand Prix? Chase Carey, CEO of the Formula One Group, is working ardently on this “after” which is still struggling to take shape. The Russian GP, which was initially scheduled for September 27, has not yet been confirmed on the program, but its promoters believe that they are in a position to hold two races while doubts still hover over the urban event of Baku, notably for logistical reasons.

Could follow an Asian campaign consisting of Hanoi, Shanghai and Sukuza before an end of the championship in the Persian Gulf with two events in Bahrain and the final in Abu Dhabi.

All this will depend on how the situation evolves in the Americas. What about Montreal which is only officially postponed? What about Austin? For now, only the promoter of the Mexican Grand Prix has spoken to confirm the date of November 1. Even if the health situation improves, the F1 will she cross the Atlantic for the sole event in Mexico City? Remember that the epicenter of the pandemic is now on the South American continent and that Brazil is hard hit.

If Formula 1 could never leave Europe in September, Liberty Media has kept several emergency solutions up its sleeve on the Old Continent. After Imola and Hockenheim, it's Mugello's turn to join the dance. After the revelations of Race fans, we have had confirmation from several sources that the holder of the commercial rights had established contact with the officials of the Tuscan circuit, which hosts the MotoGP since 1994.

Property of Ferrari, the 5,245 km track has FIA Grade 1, the essential entry point for hosting F1. Mugello has never before been the scene of a Grand Prix but it hosted an F1 test session in 2012.

If the application for the route located in the municipality of San Piero and Scarperia was selected, it would then host a race following Monza, which would allow Ferrari to celebrate the 1000th Grand Prix in its history on its land.
