The paddock unanimous on the usefulness of the Halo after the crash at the start

The spectacular accident during the first braking of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday raised many comments from followers of the Formula 1. Hit from behind by Nico Hulkenberg (Renault), Fernando Alonso (McLaren) took off on the Sauber of Charles Leclerc, forcing the three men to abandon.

The Monegasque was left with a nice scare, the slow motion showing that the car of the Spaniard passed a few centimeters from his cockpit. Very quickly, the Halo was the subject of conversations. Did it help to avoid a tragedy, that the McLaren did not hit the helmet of the champion Formula 2 2017?

For those mainly concerned, the answer is clear. “I was never a Halo fan but I have to admit I was happy to have it over my head”, declared Charles Leclerc on Sunday evening. The future (temporary?) retiree from F1 confirmed: “We didn’t need proof but the Halo was a good thing to have. »

In fact, it was Fernando Alonso's right front wheel that bounced off the right edge of the Halo, as evidenced by the black mark on the safety appendix. Other motorsport figures reacted on Twitter, with supporting photos, such as Nico Rosberg: “We can stop the Halo debate now. It will save lives! #ThanksFIA”

Jean-Éric Vergne: “Is anyone still in a position to criticize the Halo? Ugly or beautiful, he probably saved a pilot’s life! »

Felipe Massa: “After seeing this, we can say that “The Halo is wonderful! » »

Max Chilton: “And people still believe that race cars should run without (the Halo). We would have lost a fantastic talent again without this. #Well doneF1”

Jean Todt (President of the International Automobile Federation): “Safety comes first. That’s why we introduced Halo. »
