Will the budget cap in F1 lose all credibility?

The non-compliance with the rules of financial fair play of which Red Bull is guilty in 2021 puts the FIA in an unprecedented and potentially explosive situation. What sanction should I take? Beyond the case of the Milton Keynes team (UK), it is the future of the cap budget and of F1 as a whole that is at stake.

Will the budget cap in F1 lose all credibility?

Challenges for F1 go beyond the strict financial framework © Red Bull

It was a predictable situation for the F1. A mandatory step that we already imagined, when it was adopted in 2020, the flammable nature that it would take on when the FIA looked at the first financial declarations of the teams. A year after introducing its famous budget cap, established at 145 million dollars for 2021, then lowered to 140 million in 2022 (in addition to an indexation of 3,1% on the inflation rate), the budget cap is experiencing its first shocks. And the problem is twofold. Not only did a team exceed the cap last year, but it happens to be none other than the team that won the Drivers' Championship with Max Verstappen (Aston Martin a aussi été épinglée pour un vice de procédure). Le but principal ?
