The position of Team Principal is not desired by James Allison according to Toto Wolff

Next July 1st, James allison will become the new “Chief Technical Officer” of Mercedes-AMG F1, thus overseeing all technical matters within the reigning F1 world champion team, with the mission of defining the main directions of the team with regard to the future of the discipline.

A height gain which will see Mike Elliott become the new technical director of the team, but which should not be seen as a first step towards another change of position in the long term depending on Toto wolff, current Team Principal of the German team.

“James and I speak several times a day and we are completely in touch on the direction of Mercedes Motorsport and Mercedes Grand Prix, specifies Wolff on the F1 website.

So before deciding on the Technical Lead role, a year or two ago we discussed the future of the Team Principal role of the team and he made it clear that it wasn't for him.

If you look at the situation, he would absolutely be capable of being the team manager. People have so much respect for him within the company. But the thing is very simple: he said he would never do that. The team manager needs different skills and he said “no thanks, no”. »

Remember that Toto Wolff extended his involvement within Mercedes at the end of 2020, for three more years.
